Michelle’s Edumacation

Edumacation 705027 Michelles Edumacation
This month’s Ornament Thursday theme is Academia. Last month’s theme was Red Hot. I thought I’d be smart and redecorate Helen’s work station without her knowledge. Not so smart of me. Turns out I was suddenly assigned the cleaning of that desk including dusting the designer door knob.

This month I have learned the error of my ways and recognize that my first designer door knob might not have been the best choice (or at least putting it on Helen’s desk was sorta stupid). I now offer an innocent yet educated cherub-like face designer door knob using a Krafty Lady art mold. I have graduated. No more door knob redecorations… after this one. Really. I swear. MZ

Red Hot!

ot redhot 7 08 712229 Red Hot!
I decided to use this month’s theme, Red Hot, as an excuse to accessorize Helen’s desk for her without her knowledge or permission. ( At first I was thinking something for her hair, but a red hot color would blend in too much these days.) Door knobs really tell you about the person.

This little devil may care fellow was originally a practice piece for making teeth. Tommie Howell had been kind enough to sit with me for a special lesson. I remade him for Ornament Thursday in a lovely hot red color. He’s a mix of Kato and Premo clays and has a wash of black oil paint to give him that nice sunken eyed complexion.

Ornament Thursday, it’s only a week away

OT teaser 766278 Ornament Thursday, its only a week away
Ornament Thursday’s Independence theme gets its launch next Thursday. We’ll be unveiling our own take on Independence. Helen (albeit that she’s an Aussie) has gone all Red, White and Blue and Michelle has a very different take on what independence is to her. Armed with clay and tools, she has a beautiful piece to ponder just what independence is all about.

Till next week…

Ornament Thursday and the insects are out!

bug helen 739593 Ornament Thursday and the insects are out!
This month’s insectia inspiration came from a class which I attended recently with Christi Friesen. Christi does some great things combining pearls and bakeable jewels with polymer clay. I created this leaf design using some green clay left over from a caning project. Attached to the leaves is a snake of clay, and in the curves and down one edge of the large leaf I wired small freshwater pearls into the clay. The ladybug – insectia! – is a small dot of red clay with black accents. I don’t think that leaves are ever quite complete without at least one ladybug attached.

The completed project can be finished with a pin back and used as a broach or, better still, a simple hanging mechanism can be added so it can be affixed to a necklace of polymer clay beads and pearls. HB

Michelle has been busy this month too. I snuck a look at her project and here it is. Nothing from her yet explaining her work – probably because she is wrist deep in a milk carton full of Mix and Mold molding compound. She’s casting hands for a fun Halloween project. Hopefully her hand gets out in time for her to eat dinner!

Ornament Thursday redefines motherhood

ot motherhood 4 08 749390 Ornament Thursday redefines motherhood
Ornament Thursday again! Feels like it was just a month ago.

This month’s theme is motherhood. I had fun making this pin. It’s made from cane pieces made out of Kato Polyclay. Tiger lilies have kids too (sort of). I made the cane parts and before assembling it into a flower cane, I cut off some individual petal slices and made a 3D flower and bud.

An eye pin and some chain hooks the bud to the pin, much like I was hooked to my mother’s skirts when I was just a bud. MZ

Hop over to Ornament Thursday to see what everyone else has been up to this month.

It’s Sprout time at Ornament Thursday

michelle sprout 771908 Its Sprout time at Ornament Thursday

Prediction: Brussel sprout handbags all the rage this summer!

‘Sprout Month” is my first foray into Ornament Thursday. I admit to struggling a bit – I wondered if I could just grab some sunflower sprouts and glue them to jump rings for a short term earring/necklace combo, all the time hoping that salad wasn’t on the menu that day. Then something Jean Yates had said once came to me, it was along the lines of every piece you design should have a story and everything in it should be interrelated. She must have known sprout month was coming up. What else but a brussel sprout handbag fits the bill? It’s called a sprout, the little cabbage head opens up like a purse, and the sprouts are carried to market on a stem. A quick trip to the refrigerator unearthed sprouts ready for the pan – they taste great tossed in olive oil and salt and roasted at 350 degrees until their outer leaves darken… but I digress.

The handbag base was shaped on a metal form and covered with Kato Polyclay leaves. My “real” sprouts were a little old and their outer leaves were turning brown. True to form my sprout was aged using a skinner blend of green and brown clay. The brussel sprout stem handle (complete with you guessed it… sprouts) is a thick wire armature covered and decorated. It has to be strong enough to take some weight when shopping at the local market. I like butternut squash and a flimsy handle just won’t do!

Art school to the Rescue

Like Michelle I agonized over this project. I tossed around ideas for weeks until it finally came to me the morning of my deadline for making it. Why I worry about things I don’t know. My imagination has never seriously let me down but I have a hard time trusting it on new projects – I kinda like to agonize and over think things instead of sitting back and letting the creative process happen.

This ornament combines my photography with an exercise from art school. At art school we had to render a single ‘thing’ in a number of different ways. Then I drew my riding boot 25 times, here it is 9 sprouts rendered in different techniques from quilling and embroidery to paper and fabric. Each sprout is assembled on top of a photo – it seemed amazing to me that almost every plant starts as a little shoot with two leaves. After that, they diverge, ultimately becoming trees, vegetables and flowers. The panels are tiny ¾ x 1 in pieces of matt board with photos attached. The embroidery pieces are done on transparency and everything else is just glued on. I had a blast making it – I put Vin Diesel in XXX in the DVD player – I really get inspired by that movie (tragic huh?) and before the movie was over, the project was done!

Here’s the wonderful handiwork of all the other OT team members, enjoy!:

It’s Ornament Thursday Preview time – What’s a sproutin’?

This is our first month with the Ornament Thursday group and the topic is sprout. OK, sounds easy? Probably is since Michelle’s piece is all done. Lynn Kvigne from Beading Help web has finished her project too and it’s up as a sneak preview on the Ornament Thursday blog. Go check it out - I think it looks wonderful even tho it’s only half a photo!

As for me, well I have made time to make a lot of excuses for not starting but so far, no action towards actually getting going. My thoughts are going in an infrared direction and I know I have some great photos to use, but who knows? Time will tell.

Cool things happening all around…

It’s always exciting when good things happen to folks who deserve them. I heard some great news last night when Nikki Green called to confirm that she’s one of the new fashionistas at ScrapInStyleTV, aka SisTV, joining the likes of Claudine Hellmuth and others there. Nikki does great work and she really does deserve to do well in the scrapbooking arena… so well done Nikki and congratulations.

On the home front, I just heard we got accepted into Ornament Thursday, an artist group that makes wonderful projects, in all types of genres, so varied and so fun and way cool. They post their pieces once a month, and today is the day for the current round. Next month we get to play, no doubt we’ll be burning the midnight oil mere hours before the deadline conjuring up all sorts of things. I love to get to play, there’s precious little time to do that with all the other projects we have to do and with a new book contract and only months to finish it in, playtime will be thin on the ground. But, since it feeds everything else, it is also very necessary.

mini mini 765718 Cool things happening all around...
In the meantime, Michelle has been working on some special gals. Just when you thought that her Baroque Beauty moulds couldn’t get any smaller, well, they did. She’s been making and dressing cute backsides for a giveaway on an upcoming clay cruise, but I snuck one out of the pile to send to Margot Potter. Margot has a rather sad tale to tell about some cute partially naked 20′s French cartoon women who apparently are offensive to some folk so she had to ‘dress’ hers for an upcoming book project. So, just to remind Margot that even dressed women can sometimes (deliciously) offend, this little lady is winging her way across the country to a new home! She is tiny, less than 1.5 in from twinkle toes to the tips of her little fingers and she makes even the mini baroque beauty mould look positively gigantic! You gotta love her bikini too!
